Three days in the Mitsio archipelago

North-west of Madagascar stretches a chain of volcanic islets still little-known to the general public: the Mitsio Archipelago. These islands, with turquoise waters and pristine beaches, offer postcard-perfect scenery, while their isolation makes them a haven of biodiversity and Malagasy traditions.
An excursion to Nosy Mitsio, organized by the professional team of Mada Tours Guide (MTG), allows you to discover these preserved landscapes in complete peace of mind. From the fishing villages of Grande Mitsio to the majestic basaltic columns of the Organ Pipes, and the legends of the Four Brothers, the journey is an immersion into Sakalava culture and unspoiled nature.

Presentation of the Mitsio Archipelago (Nosy Mitsio)

A preserved volcanic archipelago

The Mitsio Archipelago lies about 45 nautical miles (70 km) northeast of Nosy Be, and 60 km northwest of Ambilobe. After a sometimes choppy crossing from the coast, visitors discover untouched islets surrounded by deep-blue sea.
Grande Mitsio, the main island, is 12 km long and 3 km wide, rising to 206 m. Most islands are uninhabited; Nosy Mitsio (also called Grande Mitsio) hosts several fishing villages and coconut plantations, while Tsarabanjina has a small eco-lodge.
The rest of the archipelago is made up of islets such as Nosy Lava, Nosy Ankarea, Nosy Toloho, and the Four Brothers group.

Iconic Sites of Mitsio

Grande Mitsio (Nosy Mitsio)

The only inhabited island in the archipelago, Grande Mitsio remains scarcely developed and home to a few fishing villages. The population lives mainly from rice farming and fishing.
The island offers white sandy beaches with crystal-clear waters and a unique geological phenomenon: on its southern tip, impressive basalt columns rise like long organ pipes. These Organ Pipes exceed 20 m in height and were formed by volcanic eruptions more than 100 million years ago.

The Four Brothers

Off the coast of Grande Mitsio, four silver-gray basalt blocks emerge from the sea. They are partially covered with savanna and caves, serving as nesting grounds for hundreds of seabirds (brown boobies, frigatebirds, tropicbirds, etc.).
Their cliffs plunge 20 m underwater, making the site a superb playground for divers.

Nosy Ankarea

This small island is surrounded by magnificent beaches. Its summit reaches 219 m, and the trail leading to the top crosses a forest of succulent plants protected by local fady (taboos).
The bay of Nosy Ankarea shelters exceptional marine life, where divers can observe corals, gorgonians, and colorful fish.

Nosy Tsarabanjina

The first island encountered when coming from the south, Tsarabanjina means “island of white sand” in Malagasy. It is surrounded by a coral reef home to dolphins and green turtles, while humpback whales can be observed from July to August.
Its volcanic hills host baobabs and pachypodiums, and the island’s eco-lodge is the only accommodation in the whole archipelago.

Nosy Lava

The northernmost island of the archipelago, Nosy Lava is 3.5 km by 1.5 km, with a maximum altitude of 160 m and a long sandbar that appears at low tide.
It is covered with vegetation and used as a base by fishermen and divers.

Nosy Toloho

Located between Grande Mitsio and Tsarabanjina, this small rocky and sandy island hides the tombs of Sakalava kings.
Visiting is subject to lunar cycles, and visitors must wear a lamba (traditional sarong) and offer honey, money, or rum as a tribute.
